Research Interests

The Keating Lab is unique in so far as it covers the spectrum of investigation from lab observations to the design and initiation of clinical trials and focuses on translational research in two areas:

1) Regenerative medicine with an emphasis on the role of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) in tissue regeneration: In vitro studies probe mechanisms of action and are aimed at identifying activated subsets of MSCs that exhibit different physiological and potentially therapeutic properties. These lab studies are validated in animal models of tissue injury and form the basis and rationale for the design of early phase clinical trials in injured myocardium, lung and the musculoskeletal system.

2) Anti-cancer cell therapy with innate immune cells, especially NK cell lines and gamma delta T cells : We have extended our work showing the preferential killing of acute myeloid leukemia and multiple myeloma cancer propagating cells to include strategies for the specific targeting of malignant precursors. The studies have ranged from lab observations of mechanisms of cytotoxic activity to demonstration of efficacy in animal models and the initiation and completion of a clinical trial.
